Pecan Cracking, Shelling, and Packing

This blog is mostly pictures and is the last entry in my Pecan series.  I hoped you enjoyed it.  If not, well we will go back to normal next week.  Happy Mother's day to all those mother's out there.

If any of my video's say they are not available, try again to refresh as sometimes the internet connection can be too slow and give you that error.

After a few weeks of being around the pecans, Sophie has finally decided to help us sort them.  Here is a little video of her helping us out.

Cracking nuts can be very messy.  You see Blake sitting here at the cracker.  He is supposed to be wearing glasses as well as the shells tend to go all over the place.  Here is a video of it as well.

Then you peel the shells off.  This is a tedious job, but you can do it while watching movies or chatting with friends so it doesn't get too boring.

You sort them into 'pretty' pieces, cooking pieces, and dog pieces.  The "pretty"ones are bagged for selling. Here is a picture of the unpretty pieces used for cooking.  Blake gets to eat some of these as reward for helping and we sometimes get them for free as well - a benefit of being friends of the company!  Now all I have to do is figure out how to cook with them:)

The first step in packing them is to put the stickers on the bags.  There is one that goes on the front and one that goes on the back.

Look at all the goodness in this package!  Gluten free, GM free, No Cholesterol, Low GI, Insectide Free.  Yum! Yum!

Then the nuts are carefully weighed.  They have 3 different sizes, 70g. 150g and 250g.  Kaye likes to put in a little over the amount.  What a good business woman!  I'm always going to buy my pecans from Tweed River Pecans as they have the best customer service and quality.

Then the bags are sealed with this neat little machine that Blake loves to use.  He seals up little bags of stuff to take to school in his lunch.

And last but not least, a used by date is attached.  Raw cracked Pecans get twelve months.

Here is the some of the finished product.

And if you want to see this again, here it is on video.
