Mosaic

Last weekend I joined my new group!  It's called the Jam Jar club.  We went to this wonderful Lady's house (Trish) and she has a workshop set up to do mosaic.  Her art is just beautiful!  She has done walls, plates, balls, pots, you name it.  Those of us in the group varried from first timers (me!) to hobbiests to professionals.  Gillian and Kaye and Janet were all in our group as well.  I met a lot of nice lovely people.

You start by choosing something you want to decorate.  This can be anything but it works best if it's not a smooth plastic or polished item as the glue/cement doesn't stick well with it.  Then you have to get an idea in your head of how you want to decorate it.  It can be designs, pictures, whatever.  Then you start by cementing or using this stuff that looks like caulk but they call it liquid nails.  I did a pot/planter with a boat and a sunset.  Or rather I tried. After you get all your tiles on you grout it or fill in all the gaps.  Some people choose not to do this, and some really good ones actually get their tiles close enough and small enough that they don't need to.  Lastly you have to clean the grout off the tiles.

It was quite fun and I think I want to make my own workshop.  However, to get really set up it would cost a little bit so it may have to wait.  They are also not very convenient to ship and most of what I make ends up being gifts.  So maybe that will be put on the wish list for later.

Grouting

My pot half done. The picture is upside down so the pot would be right side up so you can see my boat.  Sort of.  The reds and purples are supposed to be a sunset and there will be water underneath.  I now have it all done but the grouting and will get you a finished picture soon.

If you need tiles cut straight, you use this thingy.

Gillian smashed a nice plate and kept the whole picture, put it back together and put it in the bottom of her bird bath.  Then she tiled around it.

Smashing.

Professional Pot.

Oh, and here is a video of Rocky playing in Sophie's swing.
