A day hike

Last weekend we tried to go hiking in the Lower Portals. A nice nature hike about 100K's from here to the west. It was hot but bearable and we were all set to go. Blake was good on the way there and all the signs were there that it would be a nice beautiful event.

We got there and got all packed up. Michael was carrying the lunch, Sophie and the nappy bag (all his choice!), I was carrying water and Blake was carrying water and his rock book, camera and a few other items he decided he wanted to bring.

About 10 minutes into it, he said he was tired, but we were still optimistic. He wanted to trade packs and we explained that it was his choice to bring all that stuff so he had to carry it. Well he started to get an attitude, then the attitude turned into a fit. We spent about 20 minutes trying to get him to change his attitude and stop to no avail. Then, we finally had to send him back to the car.

Except he didn't go. He cried and screamed and followed us down the path for another 20 minutes. Now keep in mind that there were other hikers all around us, most were parents and sympathized. We finally had to turn around with him as he wouldn't go by himself. We stopped by a stream to eat a snack and give Sophie a play in the stream while Blake was in time out and then continued on to the car. Blake argued the whole time that he still wanted to go.

It's sort of funny now that I look back on it, and we did get some great pictures of him throwing his fit, but it was a lot of time and gas wasted. The hike, what we saw, was beautiful. There were ups and downs on the way instead of all uphill and we crossed a stream at least once. I heard there was a pool for swimming at the destination and we all had our swimmers on. Maybe we will get back there another time.

Sophie really liked feeling the water and rocks with her hands and not her feet.

Sophie's "It's so cold!", face.

"What is this funny hat doing on mom's head?" "Oh! It's a new toy for me."

Sophie's first play in a creek.

Sophie in her awesome REI backpack that fits the nappy bag stuff, her, the lunch, and two water bottles. I'm glad I wasn't carrying it.

The happy gang, before we started.
