Shopping Extravaganza

Well, since I was recently in the US and Jeremiah reminded me how to make our delicious Pin Wheels, I decided to make some for our BBQ this weekend. Seemed simple enough.....NOT! There was one ingredient that was easy, like the garlic, which we already had and the Ranch Dressing which I know they don't have here so we have stock on hand from the US. Oh and the block cream cheese and green onions were easy. The rest.... well....

They don't have whipped cream cheese here, though they do have 'spreadable', though it's still hard. Good thing I broke down and bought that mixer the other week or my arm would wear out before I got done making this thing. The Tortillas they have here are tiny. If I didn't want to make 50 instead of 12 I had to look really hard to get the 'large' ones (our normal size). Oh and then they only come in packs of 6. They don't have diced green chili's here either. So Michael told me to get regular chili's and he would steam them and dice them for me. Fair enough, except they didn't have any green ones so I had to get red ones. To counter that I had to get green capsicum (peppers) instead of red.

I went to get the Cilantro out of the fresh food section and I'm looking... I see parsley, coriander, mint, basil, etc etc, but no Cilantro. After a 10 minutes search I call Michael only to find out they call it Coriander here. Then comes the Pimientos, you know those little red bits they stuff inside of olives? Usually you can get a cute little jar of just these red bits, but no, not here. I had to buy the stuffed olives and have Michael eat the olives and save the red bits! And that was only after I asked 3 different people and they walked me back and forth across the store 4 times. Needless to say my 15 minutes shopping trip took me near 2 hours.

These better be really good pinwheels and unless someone from the US can send me diced green chili's and pimientos, this will be one of the only times I make them!

P.S. Michael just said they were GREAT!

  1. Haha....we laughed at the coriander...that's what it's called here too. If it helps, it used to take us much longer to cook but you'll get the hang of it because you'll learn what's available and how to find it...or if it's not you know you'll just have to go without. Glad they were good...and thanks for the photos!!! Jon & Leah
