Adventure 3 - Australia - We made it!

Where to start, where to start…. Well June 10th we officially left. We left for the airport at 3:00pm. After the 40 minute drive, the hour check in line, the 30 minutes to return the rental car, we had 30 minutes to get back and board the plane. We would have made it on time but they had the wrong gate number on our tickets. We still made the plane but were the last to board. At least there was no boring wait at the airport. The flight to California was uneventful and lasted about 2.5 hours. After we rechecked in for Air New Zealand, from United and found our gate we thought we had an hour wait so went to order some food. Michael found they were boarding our flight already 30 minutes early so we had to let our waitress know and leave to board again nearly last. I really do like this non-waiting at airports. The flight was 12.5 hours to Auckland, New Zealand. We had a 50 minute layover and then another 3.5 hours to Brisbane. Michael’s parents met us with vehicles and then there was a 1.5 hour drive home. So after about 26 hours of travel, we finally arrived at our destination of Murwillumbah.

The trip was pretty much uneventful. Blake had about 8 hours of sleep, Michael about 6 and me about 4. Besides my feet swelling to the size of watermelons, I did great and the baby didn’t complain. The food was actually decent and we were right close to the bathroom, though I walked to the back of the plane to get more exercise whenever I could.

That puts us at June 12th at about 11am. We stayed up the rest of the day so we could try to get our sleeping schedule normal. We ate lunch, went to the supermarket, looked around the farm, opened a bank account, looked at mobile phones, ate dinner and went to bed at about 6pm. Slept really good till about 5am. Today was just more errands. We bought a mobile phone and an adapter so I can charge my blackberry. We unpacked and did laundry. We did go see a general practitioner doctor to get a referral for an OB and have an appointment on Monday so that’s going well. Most of the rest of this week will be errands so I’m not sure I’ll have a lot to write about. I’ll try to fill up the boring spots with interesting titbits and pictures. Of course before we do pictures I have to get rid of this dial up connection. The DSL guy is coming sometime next week. If any of you wrote emails, be patient. I’ll reply when the DSL is hooked up. It takes us an hour to check our banking!

Funny thing…. We were connecting to the internet, and everyone in my generation and older all know the distinctive sound of the computer connecting to the internet over dial up. Well….. If this doesn’t make you feel old, nothing will. My son came in while we were connecting and asked ‘what is that noise’. It made me laugh so hard. Someone that doesn’t know what a dial up noise is. Man our kids have it easy now days.

So anyway, right now we are just getting settled. Keep checking back and I’ll let you know how my first driving on the left side goes and update with some pictures of the area. And I’ll try to include some Australian slang each time I write too. I can’t call the bathroom’s a restroom or bathroom, it’s Toilet or Dunny. They don’t have yield signs here, they have ‘give way’ signs. Most of the food has different names to learn as well, like ketchup is sauce and a sandwich is ‘sanga’. You don’t wear a swim suit, you wear bathers. And a receipt is called a docket. That is just the start. I have three pages of these so far! Oh and guys, here a rubber is actually an eraser, and if you tooted, you honked the horn in your car.

I wish everyone the best and miss you all.
